India’s star javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, has once again made the nation proud by securing his spot in the prestigious Diamond League finals. Neeraj, who is a two-time Olympic medalist, qualified after finishing fourth in the overall standings across 14 Diamond League series. The much-anticipated finals will be held in Brussels on 13th and 14th September, marking the end of this year’s athletics season.
Neeraj Chopra’s Road to the Finals
Chopra had an impressive performance throughout the Diamond League this season, earning 14 points. He secured second place finishes in the Doha and Lausanne stages, proving his consistent form. However, Neeraj did not participate in the Zurich series, which slightly impacted his ranking. In the final standings, he trailed by just two points behind third-placed Czech athlete, Jacob Vadlech. Anderson Peters from Grenada and Julian Weber from Germany finished first and second in the overall points table, with 29 and 21 points, respectively.
Despite not participating in the Zurich stage, Neeraj’s earlier performances ensured he had enough points to make it to the finals.
Fitness Struggles and Determination
This season, Neeraj Chopra faced challenges with his fitness, particularly a back injury that has troubled him since before the Tokyo Olympics. He has openly discussed how this injury has been a hurdle in achieving his goal of crossing the elusive 90-meter mark in javelin throw. In the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League, Neeraj finished second behind Anderson Peters, who threw an impressive 90.61 meters.
Neeraj, known for his dedication and determination, remains focused on recovering fully from his injury. He said in a recent interview, “I need to consult the doctor and get my back completely fit. Along with that, I will also work on my technique and aim to throw farther.”
