It’s always thrilling to watch a batsman score big in cricket. But sometimes, even a powerful innings isn’t enough to secure a win for the team. Here, we look at five Indian batsmen who played some of the biggest innings in T20 International matches that India ended up losing.
1. KL Rahul – 110 Runs
In 2016, India faced West Indies in a high-scoring match in America. West Indies posted a massive total of 245 runs. In response, KL Rahul played a stunning innings of 110 runs in just 51 balls. Despite his heroics, India fell short by just one run, making it a heartbreaker for the team.
2. Suryakumar Yadav – 117 Runs
Suryakumar Yadav smashed 117 runs off 55 balls against England in a 2022 match held in Nottingham. India was chasing 216 runs, and while Surya fought hard, other Indian batsmen couldn’t match his performance, resulting in a loss for India.
3. Ruturaj Gaikwad – 123 Runs
Ruturaj Gaikwad holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20 International that ended in defeat. He played an incredible knock of 123 runs against Australia in Guwahati in 2023. India posted a strong total of 222 runs, but Australia chased it down, winning the match.
4. Rohit Sharma – 106 Runs
Rohit Sharma’s first T20 International century came in 2015 against South Africa. He scored 106 runs in Dharamsala, helping India post a target of 199. However, South Africa chased the total and won the match with two balls remaining, leaving Rohit’s efforts in vain.
5. Shikhar Dhawan – 90 Runs
Shikhar Dhawan played a brilliant innings of 90 runs in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy opener against Sri Lanka. Despite his efforts, no other Indian batsman could provide enough support, and Sri Lanka comfortably won the match by five wickets.
These matches remind us that cricket is a team game, and even the best individual performances may not always lead to victory.
