Indian Formula 2 driver, Kush Maini, experienced a terrifying crash during the opening lap of a race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The 23-year-old driver, representing Invicta Racing, narrowly avoided what could have been a serious accident. His car suddenly stopped, leaving no time for fellow racers Josep Maria Marti and Oliver Goethe to react, leading to a collision. The impact was severe, destroying the rear section of Kush’s car.
Despite the severity of the accident, Kush Maini miraculously emerged unharmed. His father, Gautam Maini, confirmed that all medical tests were completed following standard protocols and that Kush was in good health. His survival can be credited to the advanced safety measures in place in motorsports today, which have improved significantly in recent years.
The incident brought back memories of tragic accidents in motorsports. Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert died in a similar crash at Spa Francorchamps in 2019, and Jules Bianchi lost his life after a fatal collision at the 2014 Japan Grand Prix. Since then, the introduction of the ‘halo’ head-protection device has been vital in ensuring driver safety.
Kush Maini is currently ranked 11th in the ongoing Formula 2 season, and while the crash was a major scare, his safe recovery is a testament to the sport’s evolving safety standards.
