Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s legendary all-rounder, might be on the brink of playing his last Test match. Just before the Kanpur Test against India, Shakib made a major announcement, revealing his decision to retire from T20 Internationals immediately. He also expressed his wish to retire from Test cricket after the home series against South Africa next month. However, security concerns in Bangladesh may force him to end his Test career earlier than expected.
Security Issues May Force Shakib’s Retirement After Kanpur Test
Shakib’s participation in the South Africa series, which was supposed to be his last in the Test format, depends entirely on the security arrangements provided to him in Bangladesh. Following a four-hour board meeting on September 26 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Farooq Ahmed made a significant statement on the matter.
Farooq Ahmed clarified that the board cannot guarantee Shakib’s security. “The government is responsible for providing security, not us. We are not a security agency, nor do we have the capacity to handle these matters. It’s up to the government to decide on Shakib’s security,” Ahmed explained during the press conference. This statement has raised serious doubts about Shakib’s future in Bangladesh cricket.
Could Kanpur Test Be Shakib’s Last Match?
If adequate security cannot be arranged for Shakib in Bangladesh, the Kanpur Test could very well be his final match in the format. With the uncertainty surrounding his participation in the South Africa series, this match against India is now seen as a potential farewell for the all-rounder in Test cricket. Shakib, who has served as a key figure for Bangladesh over the years, is going through a difficult period personally, which may have influenced his decision to step away from the game.
Farooq Ahmed mentioned that the board respects Shakib’s desire to retire but stressed that the decision now lies with higher authorities. “If he can play his last Test here, it would be great, but the security issue needs to be resolved first,” said Ahmed.
Rain Threat Looms Over Kanpur Test
To add to the uncertainty, there is also a forecast of rain over the duration of the Kanpur Test, further complicating the situation. Fans and cricket enthusiasts are hopeful that Shakib will get the opportunity to fully showcase his talent one last time, but the weather may affect his farewell match.
With so many variables at play, it remains to be seen whether Shakib Al Hasan will have the chance to bid farewell to Test cricket on his own terms.
