Bollywood actress Tamanna Bhatia is facing increasing scrutiny after being summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) about the ongoing investigation of IPL 2023 illegal streaming and online betting apps. The investigation is centered around the “FairPlay” app, which allegedly violated intellectual property rights by illegally streaming IPL matches. Tamanna, along with other celebrities, has been questioned regarding her connection to these apps.
IPL 2023 and Illegal Streaming Case
In September 2023, Viacom filed a complaint against the “FairPlay” app for illegally broadcasting IPL matches, a right owned exclusively by Viacom. The app allegedly caused a loss of over Rs 100 crore to the broadcaster. Several prominent figures from Bollywood, including Tamanna Bhatia, were interrogated due to their association with promotions and performances related to the app.
Tamanna’s Connection to Mahadev Betting App
The parent company of “FairPlay” is the Mahadev Betting App, a betting platform where people invest in various sports like cricket, football, poker, and more. Although gambling is restricted in India, these apps operate from overseas, with Mahadev Betting App headquartered in the UAE. The ED is probing the role of Bollywood celebrities in promoting these platforms through high-profile events, performances, and endorsements.
Bollywood’s Involvement
The mastermind behind Mahadev Betting App, Saurabh Chandrakar, is believed to have built an illegal betting empire that’s now under investigation. He organized lavish events, including his wedding in Dubai, where many Bollywood celebrities performed. It is alleged that celebrities, including Tamanna Bhatia, were not only paid large sums for their performances but were also asked to support the app publicly.
