In an impressive achievement for Indian chess, 3-year-old Anish Sarkar from Kolkata has officially become the youngest player to earn a FIDE rating, setting a new record at just 3 years, 8 months, and 19 days. Born on January 26, 2021, Anish gained an Elo rating of 1555, securing his place in chess history on November 1, 2024. This makes him the youngest rated player globally, breaking the previous record set by Indian player Tejas Tiwari, who achieved this milestone just before turning five.
Anish’s journey in competitive chess began at an age when most children are still learning to speak. His first taste of the chessboard was during the West Bengal State Under-9 Open Tournament in October, where he displayed exceptional skill, scoring 5.5 out of 8 possible points. His initial success caught the attention of chess enthusiasts and coaches alike, as he secured a place in the top 25 and defeated two rated players, Arav Chatterjee and Ahilan Baishya.
The young chess talent continued his journey by participating in the 1st SXCCAA All Bengal Rapid Rating Open 2024, his first FIDE-rated tournament. Anish’s performance here was equally impressive, scoring 5 points out of 11 games, and setting himself up for a bright future in the sport. His rapid progress led to an encounter with India’s top-ranked Grandmaster and World No. 4, Arjun Erigaisi, during a simultaneous exhibition match. This opportunity gave Anish invaluable experience and solidified his reputation as a young chess prodigy.
Anish also participated in the West Bengal State Under-13 Open, where he faced off against five rated players, further sharpening his skills. Each tournament and match helped him build his rating, resulting in his official FIDE rating of 1555. His rapid rise has not only marked a personal milestone but has also positioned him as a young chess icon in India and around the world.
Anish’s early achievements highlight the remarkable potential he possesses. He has shown that age is no barrier to making a mark in competitive chess. With his natural talent and determination, Anish Sarkar is a name to watch in the years to come as he continues to play his way into chess history.
