The ongoing copyright dispute between Tamil superstar Dhanush and actress Nayanthara has taken a legal turn. Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Pvt. Ltd., has filed a civil case in the Madras High Court against Nayanthara, her husband and filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, and their production house, Rowdy Pictures Pvt. Ltd. The case revolves around alleged unauthorized usage of scenes from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.
High Court Demands a Response
The Madras High Court has acknowledged the petition and directed Nayanthara to respond. Dhanush’s team has also sought permission to file a lawsuit against Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, Netflix’s Indian content investment arm. The court has allowed this request. According to reports, Dhanush’s team claims that specific footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan was used in the documentary without prior approval.
Nayanthara’s Counterclaims
Nayanthara’s team has denied the allegations, asserting that the footage in question includes only three seconds of behind-the-scenes content rather than actual movie scenes. The actress stated that she had sought permission but was denied. Instead of halting production, she opted for minimal use of footage, yet she received a legal notice from Dhanush demanding a hefty compensation of Rs 10 crore.
Wedding Cold War Adds to the Drama
Adding fuel to the fire, Dhanush and Nayanthara recently attended a high-profile wedding in Chennai, where they reportedly avoided each other entirely. Their mutual distance was noticeable, further sparking media interest in their strained relationship.
History Behind the Legal Battle
Naanum Rowdy Dhaan is a 2015 Tamil hit that marked the beginning of a significant relationship between the two stars. Directed by Vignesh Shivan and produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, the film brought Nayanthara and Dhanush together. Their professional association soon turned personal, culminating in their marriage in June 2022.
