Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut is in the spotlight as her upcoming film Emergency stirs controversy ahead of its release. The film, which depicts the political scenario during the 1975 Emergency in India, is set to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. Despite the excitement around its release, the film has also attracted significant controversy, including death threats against the actress.
Kangana Ranaut Responds to Threats
Kangana Ranaut, known for her fearless attitude, has made it clear that she is undeterred by the threats she has received. Speaking to Aaj Tak, she emphasized her resolve to continue promoting her film, stating, “They cannot scare me. I cannot let the voice of this country die. These people may threaten me, shoot me, I am not afraid. This hooliganism is not going to work.” Kangana stressed that Emergency is based on facts available in the public domain, and she is determined to bring this story to the audience.
Calls to Ban Emergency in Punjab
The film has faced strong opposition, particularly in Punjab, where protests have been staged outside theaters. A significant concern is the portrayal of Sikhs in the film, leading to calls for a ban on its release in the state. Advocate Iman Singh Khara has even filed a petition in the Punjab-Haryana High Court seeking to halt the film’s release, claiming that the Sikh community has been depicted in a negative light.
In addition to legal action, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut and the film’s producers, demanding an apology for the alleged misrepresentation of Sikhs. The SGPC has also called for the trailer to be removed from digital platforms.
Death Threats Against Kangana Ranaut
Adding to the controversy, a video surfaced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on August 26, showing Vicky Thomas Masih issuing a death threat against Kangana if the film is released. In response, Kangana took to social media to share the video, tagging the Punjab Police, Himachal Police, and Maharashtra DGP, urging them to take swift action.
The Film’s Journey to Release
Emergency has had a tumultuous journey to the big screen. Initially slated for release in 2023, the film’s launch was delayed multiple times. Kangana initially planned to release the film on November 24, 2023, but it was postponed to June 14, 2024, only to be pushed again to its current release date of September 6, 2024.
In Emergency, Kangana takes on the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a character that has already generated considerable buzz. Besides acting, Kangana has also directed the film, showcasing her multifaceted talent. The film features an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Manisha Koirala, Mahima Chaudhary, and Milind Soman.
What to Expect from Emergency
The film is expected to provide a deep dive into the political and social turmoil of the 1975 Emergency period, a pivotal moment in Indian history. With Kangana at the helm, both as lead actress and director, Emergency is poised to be a significant release, though its road to theaters has been anything but smooth. The controversies surrounding the film have only heightened public interest, setting the stage for what could be one of the year’s most talked-about releases.
