Celebrated filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, known for his hard-hitting films like Mulk, Article 15, Thappad, and Anek, has returned to the spotlight with his new web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. Released on Netflix, the series dives deep into one of the most dramatic and controversial events in Indian history—the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814.
A Stellar Cast with Over 100 Actors
One of the most remarkable aspects of IC 814 is its star-studded ensemble cast, featuring some of the finest actors in Indian cinema. The series boasts performances from veterans like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and many others. In total, the series has more than 100 actors, each contributing to the intricate storytelling of this historical event.
Anubhav Sinha’s Approach to Casting
Casting such a large and talented group of actors was no easy task, but Sinha was determined to bring his vision to life with the best possible talent. Speaking about his casting process, Sinha shared how he meticulously worked to secure his dream cast. “I always strive to get the actors I want for a project. If someone initially refuses, I don’t give up—I convince them,” he revealed.
He recounted how Kumud Mishra was initially hesitant to join the cast of Mulk, but Sinha’s persistence paid off. Similarly, while Naseeruddin Shah quickly agreed to be part of IC 814, it took more effort to bring Pankaj Kapoor on board. “Pankajji wasn’t ready at first. I asked him to just listen to the role. He insisted on reading the entire script, and only after going through it did he agree,” Sinha explained.
Despite the challenges, Sinha expressed that working with such accomplished actors made directing a smoother experience. “These actors are so skilled that once you explain the scene, they bring it to life effortlessly. My main job was to capture it well on camera,” he said. However, he did admit that having so much talent on set comes with its own pressures, particularly the responsibility of doing justice to each actor’s performance.
The Story Behind the Series: Revisiting the Kandahar Hijack
The Kandahar hijack remains a significant and painful memory in India’s political history. In 1999, Flight IC 814 was hijacked by terrorists, and the incident unfolded over seven tense days, leaving the nation on edge. The hijackers’ demands included the release of 35 militants and a hefty ransom, but eventually, three terrorists were freed in exchange for the safe return of the 180-plus passengers and crew members.
Sinha reflected on his connection to the event, recalling how it had impacted him at the time. “I was early in my career when the hijack happened. I was more focused on my work, but like everyone, I was still concerned about the outcome. It was such a significant event that it couldn’t be ignored,” he said.
As Sinha delved into research for the series, he uncovered the complexities and nuances of the situation that many may not fully understand. “It took seven to eight days to resolve the hijack. It wasn’t just about negotiating—it was a matter of life and death. The demands kept changing, and the government was under immense pressure. In the end, releasing three terrorists was criticized, but the fact that 180-190 lives were saved was an extraordinary achievement,” Sinha explained.
Anubhav Sinha’s Commitment to Authentic Storytelling
With IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Anubhav Sinha continues his tradition of bringing important and often uncomfortable truths to the forefront. By revisiting the hijack through a well-researched and carefully crafted narrative, he offers viewers a chance to understand the stakes, decisions, and emotions involved in one of India’s most intense hostage situations.
The series not only aims to entertain but also to educate the audience about a pivotal moment in Indian history, reminding us of the challenges faced and the lives saved during the crisis.
