Jasprit Bumrah Early Life, School & Family
Jasprit had his fair share of challenges to overcome to become a key player in the Indian cricket team. He was 5 years old when his father Santokh Singh Bumrah, a businessman, passed away due to hepatitis B.
Daljit Kaur, Jasprit’s mother raised him as a single mother alongside his elder sister, Juhika. His mother worked as a head facility at Nirman High School in Ahmedabad. He then started playing cricket on the Nimran’s school team. He began practising his yorker (ball pitched near to popping case to deceive the batter) bowling techniques in an attempt to not disturb his mother’s afternoon nap. Which then became his signature bowling style.
His ability and attentiveness to bowl Yorkers caught his attention, and in December 2010, he was selected for the Under 19 Gujrat state team.
Youth and Domestic Career
Bumrah was selected for the under-19 Gujarat Cricket Association. However, he was still unable to play. His start was not smooth, as he was kept on reserve instead of the main squad of 15.
After three matches, he was given the opportunity in the fourth match against Vidarbha with other reserve players. This was when his official T20 debut was made on Gujrat team vs Maharashtra for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2012 -13. He was able to make his team win by getting the title of ‘Man of the Match’, striking 7 wickets in his first match. And defeating the Punjab team in the final match.
He consistently played on the Gujrat team. In the 2015 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he took the game by 5 wickets and the Gujrat team claimed Vijay Hazare Trophy by a final of 139 runs against Delhi.
Bumrah made his List A Debut in under 23 against Pakistan in the year 2011.
International Career
The Big Break (2016-17)
Jasprit Bumrah started his international career with his One Day International (ODI) debut in January 2016 against Australia. Followed by his T20I debut.
In the ODI series, he took down his first international wicket opposite Steve Smith, Australia team caption at 2 wickets and 40 Runs.
Soon, Bumrah’s T20I debut was made against Australia. He took down the first T20I wickets opposite David Warner at the score of 3/23. He was then proclaimed as “The highest wicket-taker in the series by 6 wickets”, bowling India high scoring win.

In 2013, when Jasprit played against the Mumbai team on the Gujrat team (Under 19), his unconventional style caught the eyes of the head coach of Mumbai Indian, John Wright, he was really impressed by Bumrah’s performance and unique bowling style and he got signed for Mumbai Indian (2013) making his debut in Indian premier league just at the age of 19.
