Alia Bhatt is currently one of the top choices for filmmakers, known for delivering stunning performances in films like Raazi, Dear Zindagi, and Gangubai Kathiawadi. However, her journey to becoming the iconic Gangubai was far from easy. Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently revealed a lesser-known, emotional chapter in Alia’s career.
The Heartbreak Over ‘Inshallah’
Alia Bhatt was initially cast in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated film Inshallah, alongside Salman Khan. The project was set to be a major collaboration, but due to creative differences between Salman and Bhansali, the film was abruptly shelved. This news left Alia heartbroken. Bhansali shared in an interview with Hollywood Reporter India that Alia, devastated by the cancellation, locked herself in her room and cried uncontrollably.
The Call That Changed Everything
A week after the heartbreaking news, Bhansali called Alia with another offer—the role of Gangubai in Gangubai Kathiawadi. At the time, Alia was in Los Angeles and wasn’t expecting such a big opportunity to come her way so soon after Inshallah’s cancellation. Initially, she wasn’t sure if she could do justice to the powerful character. However, Bhansali reassured her that she was perfect for the role, and she could pull it off.
From Doubts to Iconic Success
Though initially hesitant, Alia eventually embraced the challenge. Today, her portrayal of Gangubai has become one of her most acclaimed performances. Interestingly, Bhansali also shared that Alia often jokes about how she still talks like Gangubai, reflecting the deep impact the role has had on her.
Salman Khan’s Exit from ‘Inshallah’
Before Alia was cast in Gangubai Kathiawadi, Inshallah was supposed to be a major project with Salman Khan in the lead. However, due to creative differences and repeated changes in the script, Salman and Bhansali parted ways, which led to the project being canned.
