Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, often known for his bold statements, is now entangled in a new legal issue in Andhra Pradesh. A case has been registered against Varma in the Prakasam district following allegations of defaming Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his family on social media.
Complaint Filed by TDP Leader
The issue arose after TDP divisional secretary Ramalingam complained Varma at Maddipadu police station. According to police, the complaint accuses Varma of online defamation and misusing digital platforms to spread allegedly misleading information that harmed the reputation of CM Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and daughter-in-law Brahmani. The case has been registered under the IT Act, and Sub Inspector Shiv Ramaiah has initiated an investigation.
Alleged Defamatory Social Media Post
Reports indicate that Varma’s social media activity during the promotion of his recent film “Vyuham” may have triggered the complaint. The film, which explores political themes around the 2009 helicopter crash of then-Chief Minister YS Rajashekar Reddy and the rise of his son YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has stirred political conversations in Andhra Pradesh. Varma’s posts around the movie’s promotion allegedly targeted CM Naidu and his family, leading to accusations of defamation.
Political Context and Past Criticism
Ram Gopal Varma, known for his strong political opinions, has often been critical of Chandrababu Naidu. Varma’s past film “Lakshmi’s NTR” also depicted controversial events in Naidu’s political journey, focusing on his split from TDP founder NT Rama Rao (NTR). The film highlighted the 1995 events when Naidu allegedly led a faction within the TDP, leading to NTR’s political downfall. Varma’s alignment with the YSR Congress Party and its leaders has added to the tension between him and Naidu’s supporters.
The investigation is underway, and authorities are investigating whether Varma’s posts violate digital platform laws and constitute defamation.
