Kolkata witnessed a powerful show of solidarity as several prominent Bengali film industry stars joined thousands of citizens in an overnight protest on Sunday, demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered last month. The protest, which began at College Square, saw actors like Aparna Sen, Swastika Mukherjee, Sudipta Chakraborty, and Sohini Sarkar leading a rally through Central Avenue, chanting slogans of “Nyay” and “Halla Bol” throughout the night.
Stars Lead the Charge for Justice
The rally gained momentum as it moved through key parts of the city, including Esplanade and Jawaharlal Nehru Road. The participants, including actors and other artists, staged sit-ins at various locations, vowing to stay until 4 am on Monday. Their demands were clear: a thorough investigation and swift action against those responsible for the heinous crime. The protestors insisted that a representative from the ruling Trinamool Congress or the administration meet them to address their concerns and provide assurance that justice would be served.
A Call for Accountability
Filmmaker Birsa Dasgupta emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the group had formally requested a meeting with the administration. Actress Swastika Mukherjee voiced the fears of many, expressing concerns about potential attempts to suppress details of the case. Despite the ongoing CBI investigation, the protesters remain vigilant, demanding transparency and accountability in the pursuit of justice for the victim.
