BTS member Suga has faced legal consequences after being caught riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. The incident took place in August 2024, where Suga, one of the most prominent figures in South Korea’s music scene, found himself in legal trouble after violating South Korea’s Road Traffic Act.
Details of the Incident
On August 6, 2024, Suga was involved in a solo e-scooter accident while under the influence of alcohol. He was found by officers from the Seoul Yongsan Police Station after falling from his scooter. Upon arriving at the scene, officers detected the smell of alcohol, prompting them to perform a breathalyzer test.
The test revealed that Suga’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.227%, which is far above South Korea’s legal limit of 0.08%. In South Korea, a BAC above 0.08% typically leads to license cancellation.
Legal Action and Penalty
Following the incident, the Seoul Court imposed a fine of 15 million won (approximately ₹9.30 lakh) on the pop star. The court issued a summary order, which is generally used for cases considered less severe. Suga has the right to challenge this ruling within seven days if he wishes to request a formal hearing. However, given the circumstances, he is unlikely to contest the decision.
Suga’s Apology to Fans
Suga has since issued a public apology, expressing deep regret for his actions. He acknowledged the gravity of his mistake and took full responsibility for driving under the influence. In his statement, Suga explained that after consuming wine at dinner, he believed that his home was close enough to ride the electric scooter. However, he admitted that he was unaware it was illegal to operate a scooter while intoxicated.
“I breached the Road Traffic Act because I thought home was not far away and I did not understand that using an electric scooter while drunk is prohibited,” he said. Suga’s license was subsequently revoked following the incident.
Acknowledgment and Responsibility
In his statement, Suga also confirmed that no one was harmed during the incident but took complete responsibility for his actions. “Without any excuse, it is completely my responsibility, and I sincerely apologize to everyone,” he added. His acknowledgment of the mistake and the fine imposed marks the resolution of this legal matter.
While the incident has led to some backlash, Suga’s prompt apology and acceptance of the fine may help in regaining public trust.
