Lack of Support and CAS Decision: The Struggles of Vinesh Phogat
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced significant challenges during the Paris Olympics, where she accused the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and its president PT Usha of not backing her in critical moments. Vinesh alleged that she was disqualified before the gold medal match, and IOA’s lack of support made the situation worse. Well-known lawyer Harish Salve, who represented the IOA, has disclosed new insights into the matter, adding a different dimension to the issue.
The Weight Issue and CAS Decision
Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling event was a turning point. She was found to be 100 grams overweight during the second weigh-in, despite her efforts to lose the extra weight overnight. After her disqualification, she made an emotional decision to retire from wrestling, leaving the sport that had brought her much success. Vinesh had hoped for a joint silver medal through an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but her appeal was rejected.
Harish Salve’s Explanation: Coordination Lacking
Harish Salve, speaking about the case, revealed that there was a major lack of coordination during the legal proceedings. According to Salve, the law firm representing the IOA received critical documents very late, which impacted their ability to build a strong case. The athlete’s legal team was not cooperating effectively, delaying the flow of important information.
Salve also noted that his team had fought hard to defend the case and even offered Vinesh an opportunity to challenge the CAS decision in a Swiss court, but she was not willing to pursue the matter further. Salve shared this detail during an interview, saying, “Despite our hard work, the athlete did not wish to continue the legal process.”
Vinesh Phogat’s Political Journey Begins
After announcing her retirement from wrestling, Vinesh Phogat made headlines once again by joining the Indian National Congress (INC). She is set to contest in the Haryana Assembly elections, representing the Julana constituency in Jind. Her decision to enter politics comes after a career filled with both highs and lows in wrestling.
In recent interviews, Vinesh continued her criticism of IOA president PT Usha, accusing her of playing politics and using their meeting in the hospital as a publicity stunt. Despite her departure from the sport, Vinesh remains in the spotlight as she embarks on her new political journey.
