About “Munjya”: A Tale Rooted in Folk Legends
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan, Munjya is based on a folk tale connected to the Konkan district of Maharashtra. The story follows the lead character, played by Abhay Verma, who encounters a ghost named Munjya. The ghost, who died a tragic death, seeks to marry Bela, Abhay’s girlfriend, portrayed by Sharvari Wagh.
The film has captivated audiences with its unique blend of horror and comedy, making it a standout hit. Alongside Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh, the film also stars Mona Singh and Bhagyashree Limaye, adding to the ensemble cast that has brought this folk tale to life.
The Origins of “Munjya”
Director Aditya Sarpotdar shared in an interview that the inspiration for Munjya came from his childhood experiences in Konkan. He recalled that the villagers would tell him stories about Munjya, a ghost believed to reside on a peepal tree. The name Munjya refers to the sacred thread ritual, where a child’s head is shaved, and a sacred thread is worn. According to the legend, if a child dies within ten days of this ritual, they become a Brahma demon and roam the earth as Munja.
