Salman Khan, one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, is known not just for his films but also for his charitable work. Inspired by his parents’ kindness and generosity, Salman launched the ‘Being Human’ Foundation in 2007, which has been supporting thousands of people across India. In a resurfaced video, Salman revealed how his foundation operates and helps those in need.
What does Being Human do?
At its core, Being Human focuses on providing healthcare and education to underprivileged children. Salman mentioned that his foundation has spent over ₹50 crore to support heart surgeries, healthcare treatments, and the education of many children. The organization aims to make sure that financial constraints don’t stop children from accessing quality healthcare and education.
How the Foundation Works: Explained by Salman Khan
During a 2017 event at PVR, Salman Khan was asked how people can seek help from Being Human. He explained that though he founded Being Human, the foundation is mostly managed by his father, Salim Khan, and a close family friend, Dr. Sandeep. Salman shared, “There is no formal office for Being Human, and all the patients and cases are handled by my father and Dr. Sandeep.”
Salman admitted that they sometimes receive fake requests for help, but every genuine case is verified and addressed with utmost care. He emphasized that their process involves collaboration with several partners. Being Human works closely with organizations like Fortis Foundation, Suzuki Motorcycle, and The Max Foundation, which helps them support more people efficiently.
How They Fund Treatments and Education
Salman Khan explained how Being Human handles funding: “We don’t just give away the entire amount needed for someone’s treatment or education. Instead, we provide a portion of the money and direct the person to 4-5 different organizations that can contribute more. Once the full amount is raised, it is deposited directly into the hospital or school, based on the need.”
This system ensures that more people receive assistance, and resources are spread across multiple individuals.
Why Being Human Doesn’t Rely on Donations
Unlike most charitable organizations, Being Human doesn’t rely on donations. Instead, it has a unique revenue model. Salman explained, “We don’t promote ourselves too much, but we do have tie-ups with several brands, like clothing, jewellery, and bicycles. All the profits, after taxes, go towards helping those in need.”
Salman even joked about selling his belongings to contribute to the cause. These tie-ups have helped Being Human raise substantial funds without directly asking for donations.
Being Human’s Business Model
Being Human raises money through merchandise sales, including clothing and bicycles, which are available both online and in stores. This revenue goes towards supporting the foundation’s charitable efforts. Mandhana Industries Limited manages the merchandise, operating 17 Being Human stores, 6 franchise outlets, 99 store-in-stores, and 100 international outlets.
With its distinct revenue model and widespread network, Being Human has managed to create a sustainable and impactful way to give back to society. Through various partnerships, sales, and careful management, the foundation has been able to touch countless lives across India.
