At 71, Vishwa Dhiman from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has achieved an extraordinary feat by cycling from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, covering approximately 3,870 kilometers in 36 days. This remarkable journey, undertaken alongside her husband, Kamaljeet Dhiman, has earned them the title of the oldest couple to complete this route on bicycles.
Journey from Knee Pain to Cycling Enthusiast
Vishwa’s cycling journey began as a remedy for severe knee pain. Advised to consider knee replacement surgery, she sought alternative treatments. During a visit to her son in the United States, he suggested cycling as a form of exercise to alleviate her discomfort. Initially skeptical, Vishwa started cycling and gradually noticed significant relief from her knee pain. What began as a therapeutic activity soon transformed into a passionate pursuit?
Overcoming Societal Perceptions

Upon returning to India, Vishwa faced societal norms that often discourage older women from engaging in activities like cycling. Concerned about public opinion, she initially cycled during early morning hours to avoid attention. Her husband, Kamaljeet, provided unwavering support, accompanying her on these early rides. As her health improved and confidence grew, Vishwa began cycling openly, challenging age and gender stereotypes.
Participation in Cyclothons and Building Endurance

Vishwa and Kamaljeet started participating in various cyclothons across the country. Despite initial challenges, their consistent practice led to improved speed and endurance. Over time, cycling became an integral part of their lives, symbolizing resilience and determination. They have been cycling 300-400 kilometers on average every week for more than half a decade, traversing almost every state in India.
Record-Breaking Expedition: Kashmir to Kanyakumari

Fulfilling a long-cherished dream, Vishwa and Kamaljeet embarked on their cycling expedition from Srinagar to Kanyakumari. Starting on November 27, 2023, they covered the 3,870-kilometer journey in 36 days, concluding on January 1, 2024. This achievement was recognized by the International Book of Records, honoring them as the oldest couple to undertake this journey on bicycles.
Advocating for Women’s Health and Fitness

Residing in Dehradun, Vishwa observes that many women, especially in smaller towns, hesitate to engage in activities like cycling due to societal constraints. She actively encourages women to embrace cycling, highlighting its numerous health benefits, including improved fitness and enhanced self-confidence. Vishwa’s story serves as a powerful testament to the idea that age and societal expectations should not hinder one’s pursuit of health and passion.
