Whether it’s Korean horror or action, Indian audiences have always had a soft spot for them. The suspense-thriller genre, in particular, enjoys a significant fan base. This fondness for Korean content has led to many remakes in India. Continuing this trend, director Umesh Bisht has brought the Hindi adaptation of the popular Korean series ‘Signal’ as ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’. With its suspenseful narrative and excellent performances, Umesh Bisht successfully keeps the audience engaged throughout.
The Story of ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’
The story revolves around two policemen from different periods who communicate with each other through a walkie-talkie at exactly 11:11 pm. Shaurya Anthwal (Dhairya Karwa), a police officer from the 1990 and 2001 eras, communicates with a young policeman named Yug Arya (Raghav Juyal) from 2016. Together, they unravel the mysteries behind horrific crimes that took place in 1990 and 2001, helping to solve them in 2016.
The first story takes us back to Yug Arya’s childhood, where a young girl named Aditi (Ajaya Seth) is kidnapped and killed. Young Yug (Yug Pandya) witnesses this tragic event. Fifteen years later, with the help of Shaurya, a police officer from the 1990s, Yug manages to catch Aditi’s killer. The second story follows a series of ‘tie and die’ murders from 2001, where girls returning home alone at night were brutally killed. Shaurya’s girlfriend, Mukti Mohan, was also one of the victims. Years later, Yug and Shaurya finally manage to catch the vicious killer responsible for these crimes.
A strong link between these two time periods is the honest and dutiful police officer Vamika Rawat (Kritika Kamra). She falls in love with Shaurya in the 1990s and remains devoted to him even years later. Vamika works closely with Yug to bring the criminals to justice.
Review of ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’
Director Umesh Bisht has skillfully woven elements of science and human faith into this crime story, making it deeply engaging. The series kicks off with suspense and thrills as a girl is kidnapped and killed, setting the tone for the rest of the narrative. Umesh Bisht, being a pahadi himself, has set the backdrop of the story in Devbhoomi, giving the series a fresh and authentic feel.
In time travel stories, there’s often confusion between past and present, but Umesh handles this complexity with finesse. Initially, the audience may find it challenging to follow, but once the story’s atmosphere is set, they begin to relate to the different periods. Although the plot is a bit slow at times, the background music and cinematography play crucial roles in maintaining the suspense, and both aspects are well-executed in the series.
The actors’ performances are the highlight of the series. Raghav Juyal delivers a brilliant performance as Yug. Having already proven his acting prowess in the recent film ‘Kill’, where he played a negative role, Raghav now shines as a hardworking, honest, and fearless policeman. Kritika Kamra, as Vamika, not only portrays a strong police officer but also depicts the challenges of being a woman in society. Her chemistry with Raghav is interesting to watch. Dhairya Karwa plays the complex role of Shaurya with his unique style. Supporting actors like Gautami Kapoor, Harsh Chhaya, Mukti Mohan, Purnendu Bhattacharya, Gaurav Sharma, and Nitesh Pandey also contribute significantly to the series.
Why Watch?
This series is a must-watch for its suspenseful thrills and the outstanding performances by the cast.
