Bangladeshi fan Tiger Robi, in India on a medical visa, deported after an incident at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium during the India vs Bangladesh Test.
Tiger Robi’s Medical Visa Leads to Unexpected Stadium Drama
Rabi-ul-Islam, also known as Tiger Robi, a well-known Bangladeshi cricket superfan, has been deported back to Bangladesh after an incident during the India vs Bangladesh Test match at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium. Robi had come to India on a medical visa for cancer treatment but became embroiled in an unexpected situation, leading to his deportation.
Robi, who had arrived in India on September 18 for cancer treatment at a hospital in Howrah, decided to attend the cricket match instead of seeking immediate treatment. He first traveled to Chennai to support Bangladesh during their match against India, before making his way to Kanpur for the second Test.
Medical Emergency and Allegations of Assault at Green Park Stadium
The situation took a turn when Robi was reportedly assaulted at the stadium, leading to a brief hospital visit. However, police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Rajesh Kumar Srivastava, later clarified that Robi had fallen ill while watching the match. He was treated at the Regency Hospital and discharged by the evening.
Police confirmed that Robi’s illness was likely due to exhaustion, as he had spent the previous night sleeping on the streets with laborers after arriving in Kanpur late. The superfan had been waving flags and cheering for his team when he became unwell during the game.
Deportation to Dhaka Following the Incident
Following his discharge from the hospital, Robi was taken to Chakeri Airport under police escort. He was flown to Delhi, from where he caught a flight to Dhaka on Saturday afternoon. Police ensured that Robi did not leave the airport premises in Delhi and boarded his international flight back to Bangladesh.
Despite the initial claims that he had been assaulted, Robi later downplayed the incident, stating from his hospital bed that he merely felt unwell during the match and appreciated the local police for their assistance.
Questions Remain Over His Medical Visa Purpose
One lingering question is why Robi, who had obtained a medical visa for cancer treatment in Howrah, chose to travel to cricket matches instead of seeking treatment immediately. Police officials could not provide clarity on why Robi did not go to the hospital as planned. Nonetheless, after the incident, authorities ensured that the Bangladeshi national safely returned to his country.
