GMR Group, the owner of IPL team Delhi Capitals, has secured a significant deal worth Rs 1350 crore (120 million pounds) with Hampshire, a well-known county team in England. This agreement includes Hampshire’s county cricket team, the Southern Brave franchise, and the iconic Rose Bowl cricket stadium. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen played a key role in bringing both parties to the table.
Kevin Pietersen’s Role in the Deal
Kevin Pietersen, the stylish English cricketer who played for both Hampshire and Delhi Capitals, acted as the facilitator of this historic deal. Pietersen had a close connection with GMR Group Chairman, Kiran Kumar Grandhi, having played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Hampshire during his career. His relationship with both parties made him the ideal person to bridge the two organizations, despite having no direct business interest in the deal.
What Did GMR Group Acquire?
As a result of the deal, GMR Group now holds ownership of three key assets:
- Hampshire County Cricket Team – A team with a rich history in English cricket.
- Southern Brave Franchise – Part of England’s popular The Hundred tournament.
- The Rose Bowl Cricket Stadium – A renowned international venue for cricket matches, also known as Ageas Bowl.
This acquisition is expected to expand GMR’s presence in global cricket beyond their IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals, and strengthen their global sports portfolio.
Kevin Pietersen Celebrates the Deal
Kevin Pietersen, who played for Hampshire from 2005 to 2010 and captained Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, celebrated the deal, calling it a “historic day for English cricket.” Though Pietersen did not have any financial interest in the deal, his role in connecting GMR Group and Hampshire’s chairman, Rod Bransgrove, was crucial in making the agreement a reality.
A Strategic Move for GMR Group
After the deal, GMR Group Chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi praised Pietersen’s efforts, highlighting his contribution as the link between the two parties. This strategic move by GMR Group marks a new chapter in their cricket-related ventures, expanding their footprint internationally.
