With IPL 2025 fast approaching, teams are making important decisions about which players to retain before the mega auction. Reports suggest that Delhi Capitals is set to retain only three key Indian players, letting go of major names like David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, and Mitchell Marsh. According to a PTI report, the franchise is prioritizing its core Indian lineup while releasing some well-known international stars.
1. Rishabh Pant to Be Retained First
Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals’ captain and star wicket-keeper batsman, is reportedly the team’s top retention choice. Team owner Parth Jindal has confirmed that Pant will continue to lead the side, and will receive ₹18 crore for the season. Pant has been an integral part of the squad since taking over as captain in 2021, contributing both as a leader and a reliable batsman. His high brand value also plays a key role in the decision to retain him.
2. Akshar Patel Secures Second Spot
Akshar Patel, the dynamic all-rounder, will be the second player retained by Delhi Capitals. His recent performances with both bat and ball have been crucial for the team, with consistent contributions across the last three seasons. Akshar’s retention means he will pocket ₹14 crore for IPL 2025. In the last two seasons, Akshar has not only excelled with the ball, taking 22 wickets, but his batting average has also been notable, making him a key asset for the franchise.
3. Kuldeep Yadav to Be Retained Third
Delhi Capitals is also expected to retain their star spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has been a top wicket-taker for the team. Kuldeep will receive ₹11 crore for the upcoming season. Over the last two years, Kuldeep has taken 37 wickets for the franchise, proving his value as a match-winner. His ability to take crucial wickets at important moments has secured his spot in the squad.
Major Players to Exit the Squad
As Delhi Capitals narrows down its list of retained players, several prominent names will be released ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Players like David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, and Anrich Nortje are expected to be let go. Warner, who has been a consistent performer, and Shaw, once seen as a future star, have faced challenges with form and consistency, leading to their expected exit.
The team will also part ways with Khalil Ahmed, Lungi Ngidi, and Shimron Hetmyer, making space for new talents. However, it will be interesting to see which players Delhi Capitals will use the Right to Match (RTM) card for during the auction.
With a major reshuffle on the horizon, Delhi Capitals is focusing on building a core team around their young Indian stars, while preparing for a strong performance in IPL 2025.
