Mumbai: As the New Zealand cricket team began their practice session at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel took a few extra moments on the field, gazing at the pitch that holds a special place in his career. Wankhede is where he achieved his incredible feat of taking all 10 wickets in an innings, a rare accomplishment only two others—England’s Jim Laker and India’s Anil Kumble—have managed in Test cricket history. The stadium is more than just a venue for Patel; it’s where he carved his name into the annals of cricket in December 2021, with unforgettable figures of 10/119.
Ajaz, born in Mumbai and raised in New Zealand, feels a strong connection to the city. His wife is also from Mumbai, and his extended family still resides here, adding to the city’s importance in his life. “Coming back to Mumbai is always emotional,” he shared. “After that 10-wicket performance, I wasn’t sure I’d get another chance to play here, so I’m grateful to the BCCI for this opportunity.”
Reflecting on His Iconic Achievement
Patel’s historic performance at Wankhede didn’t just place him among legends but also showcased his resilience and skill. However, the recognition didn’t necessarily translate into more game time. Since that December 2021 Test, Ajaz has played only nine more Tests, with 27 wickets to his name. Although his subsequent Test appearances have been limited, he has delivered notable performances, including 14 wickets against Bangladesh in 2023 and an impressive 8/150 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2024.
Despite his success in India, Ajaz notes a stark difference between Indian and New Zealand fans. “Cricket is everything in India; it’s overwhelming. In New Zealand, people recognize you, but it’s not as intense as it is here. Back home, rugby and soccer are the main sports, so cricketers aren’t mobbed in public like they are in India,” he commented.
Reuniting with Wankhede and Its Legacy
Standing on the Wankhede pitch again has brought a wave of nostalgia for the 36-year-old spinner. Ajaz considers Mumbai a home of sorts, not just for personal reasons but also for his career milestone. He sees this match as another opportunity to make a memorable impact. “This ground holds some of my best memories. Playing here again feels like coming full circle,” he added.
