England’s rising cricket star, Gus Atkinson, has been making headlines for his incredible performances on the field. The young fast bowler, who has already claimed 33 wickets in just 5 Test matches, recently drew comparisons to South African legend Jacques Kallis after scoring a remarkable century at Lord’s against Sri Lanka. However, while Atkinson was leading England to victory, justice was being served off the field for a tragedy that struck his life four years ago.
Tragic Loss of Caroline Atkinson
Gus Atkinson’s journey has not been without its share of heartache. On December 10, 2020, his mother, Caroline Atkinson, lost her life in a tragic road accident in South London. That night, she had booked an Uber at 10:20 pm, but just five minutes after getting into the taxi, a speeding Audi Q7 driven by a man named Biron collided with her vehicle. The impact was fatal, and Caroline Atkinson passed away on the spot.
The court later revealed that Biron was driving at double the speed limit when the accident occurred. The loss of his mother was a devastating blow to Atkinson, who was just beginning his cricket career at the time.
Justice Finally Served
After four long years, justice has finally been served. The Southwark Crown Court recently sentenced Biron to 8 and a half years in prison for his reckless actions that led to the death of Caroline Atkinson. This verdict brought some closure to the Atkinson family, even as Gus continued to excel on the cricket field.
A Tribute to His Late Mother
During England’s Test series against the West Indies, the court delivered its verdict. Atkinson, who was playing at Lord’s during this period, couldn’t help but remember his mother. In a fitting tribute, he delivered a stellar performance, scoring a century and taking five wickets. Atkinson later expressed that his mother would have been incredibly proud of his achievements on the field.
