New Delhi: In a significant move to support players, Hockey India has announced a financial assistance package of Rs 2 lakh annually for unemployed players in the senior core group of both the men’s and women’s teams. This decision, made during Hockey India’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lucknow, aims to provide relief to those who have not yet secured jobs in government institutions or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey explained the rationale behind the decision, noting that while many hockey players receive job offers from PSUs and government departments based on their performances, some new players, particularly women, remain unemployed. “We have identified that some players in the senior core group, especially women, are struggling without employment. To ensure their families do not face financial difficulties, Hockey India’s Executive Board has decided to offer Rs 2 lakh annually to these athletes,” said Tirkey in an official statement.
The AGM also highlighted other crucial aspects of the sport’s future, including grassroots development, coach education, and the involvement of former players in various roles to strengthen the game further. Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh mentioned that discussions on the upcoming Hockey India League were also held, with exciting announcements expected in the near future. This initiative marks a positive step towards securing the welfare of players and promoting the growth of hockey in India.
