Hockey India has made a major announcement regarding the return of the Hockey India League (HIL), which is set to make a comeback in December 2024 after a 7-year break. With a total investment of Rs 3640 crore for the next 10 years, this initiative aims to strengthen the sport’s infrastructure and talent pool in India. The HIL, which played a key role in reviving Indian hockey, now includes both men’s and women’s teams for the first time, offering a huge boost to the sport.
Key Highlights of Hockey India’s Rs 3640 Crore Plan
The revamped Hockey India League is set to bring exciting changes, and the most prominent one is the financial investment. According to reports, Hockey India will spend Rs 112 crore annually on the league, ensuring its smooth operation over the next decade. The total amount of Rs 3640 crore includes contributions from franchises, with each team playing a significant role in promoting the sport and creating long-term sustainability.
The franchise contribution alone will be Rs 2520 crore over 10 years, while Hockey India itself will be investing Rs 1120 crore. This financial structure is aimed at making sure that the HIL doesn’t meet the same fate as before when it was discontinued after the 2017 season.
HIL 2024: More Teams, Bigger Vision
In an exciting twist, this time around, HIL will feature 8 men’s teams and, for the first time, 6 women’s teams. This move not only expands the league but also promotes gender inclusivity in Indian hockey. The league is scheduled to start on 28th December 2024, with the final match of the men’s event on 5th February 2025. The women’s final will take place on 26th January 2025.
Matches are to be held in hockey-enthusiastic cities like Rourkela and Ranchi, promising large crowds and a growing fan base.
Auction to Be Held in October
Just like the IPL, the HIL will also feature player auctions. The auction is set for 13th to 15th October, allowing teams to build their squads. Each franchise will have to select 24 players for their squad, with a focus on both domestic and international talent.
The base price for players has been fixed at Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh. The bidding process will begin from the base price, with players having the option to choose their base price before entering the auction.
A New Chapter for Indian Hockey
The re-launch of the Hockey India League with a massive investment and expanded teams is expected to boost Indian hockey like never before. This league will not only provide a platform for players to showcase their skills but will also help create new infrastructure and opportunities for the sport. By making HIL a long-term and financially sound project, Hockey India is taking a step forward in strengthening the future of Indian hockey, ensuring it remains on a high-growth path.
The inclusion of women’s teams, player auctions, and the strategic investment plan showcase Hockey India’s commitment to building a strong foundation for the sport, aligning with the country’s aspirations to shine on the global hockey stage once again.
