Indian hockey forward Abhishek, an Olympic bronze medalist and rising star, recently shared the unexpected beginnings of his hockey journey. What started as a way to avoid studying turned into a life-changing career that brought him international fame, accolades, and a dream to revive India’s golden hockey era.
The 24-year-old athlete from Sonipat, Haryana, began playing hockey at the age of 11 or 12. Speaking about his early days, Abhishek said, “I had no real interest in studies. A friend of mine played hockey and traveled often for matches, which meant he skipped school frequently. That inspired me to take up the sport, thinking I could avoid school too.”
Finding Purpose in Hockey
While hockey may have started as an escape, it soon became Abhishek’s passion. Over the years, he not only developed his skills but also found a purpose in life. Although he completed his graduation through correspondence, he knew hockey was his true calling.
Abhishek was a crucial member of the Indian hockey team that clinched the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and later secured gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games. His ultimate goal is clear: to bring back the golden era of Indian hockey. “Winning an Olympic gold medal is my dream, and I want to help Indian hockey achieve the dominance it once had,” he shared.
Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Discipline
Abhishek credits Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo for inspiring his disciplined approach to life. “I admire Ronaldo’s off-field routine, his eating habits, and his dedication. I often watch his videos and try to follow his example,” he said. This commitment to discipline has played a significant role in shaping his career and pushing him to excel on the field.
Excited for Hockey India League (HIL)
Abhishek recently made headlines as one of the highest-paid players in the Hockey India League (HIL) auction. Bought by Srachi Rar Bengal Tigers for ₹72 lakh, he is the second-most expensive player after Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh. This marks Abhishek’s first appearance in HIL, and he’s excited about the opportunities it brings.
“HIL is going to be a fantastic platform for Indian hockey. Just like IPL has nurtured cricket talent, HIL will help Indian hockey grow by giving players exposure to international stars,” he said. Sharing the dressing room with top players from Belgium and Germany is something Abhishek is eagerly looking forward to.
Embracing Pressure with a Positive Mindset
Despite being one of the costliest players in HIL, Abhishek prefers to enjoy the game rather than let the price tag add pressure. “There will be responsibility, but I don’t want to take unnecessary stress. If I do, I won’t be able to perform at my best. I just want to enjoy the game and give my 100%,” he stated confidently.
For Abhishek, HIL is not just about competition but also about learning. “Playing alongside and against top international players will help us understand the game better and pick up new skills. It’s going to be a big learning experience,” he added.
Abhishek’s journey is a testament to how unexpected beginnings can lead to incredible achievements. From dodging school to standing on the Olympic podium, his story inspires young athletes to follow their passion and aim for greatness.
