Rawalpindi: Bangladesh made a remarkable comeback on Sunday during the second Test match against Pakistan, thanks to a brilliant century by Liton Das. Despite a disastrous start, where Bangladesh was struggling at 26/6, Liton’s aggressive 138, combined with a valuable 78 from Mehdi Hasan Miraz, steered the team to a total of 262 runs.
The early part of the day was dominated by Pakistan’s Khurram Shahzad, who delivered a fierce spell, claiming six wickets for 90 runs. His impressive performance had Bangladesh on the ropes, with their top order collapsing under the pressure of his pace and swing. Alongside Shahzad, Mir Hamza also contributed, taking two wickets for 50 runs.
Bangladesh’s recovery began post-lunch when Liton and Mehdi joined forces. The pair showed incredible resilience and skill, putting together a crucial 165-run partnership that turned the game around. Shahzad, who had been almost unplayable in the morning, was met with a strong counter-attack, as both batsmen played with composure and aggression.
Liton’s century, his third in Test cricket, came right after tea, further frustrating the Pakistan bowlers. He added 69 runs with tailender Hasan Mahmud, who remained not out on 13, before Bangladesh’s innings finally ended at 262. Pakistan’s fielders had a rough day, dropping multiple catches, which allowed Bangladesh to extend their innings and gain a vital lead.
By the end of the day, Pakistan was reeling at 9/2 in their second innings, holding a slender lead of just 21 runs. The hosts lost the wickets of night watchman Shahzad and opener Abdullah Shafique, with Saim Ayub left at the crease on 6 runs.
Bangladesh’s fightback, led by Liton Das and Mehdi Hasan Miraz, has put them in a strong position to challenge Pakistan and possibly secure a win in the second Test, following their 10-wicket victory in the first Test last week.
