Australia’s experienced wicketkeeper-batsman, Matthew Wade, has officially retired from international cricket, marking his second major farewell in less than a year. Earlier in March, Wade stepped away from first-class cricket after playing his last red-ball match in the Sheffield Shield final. Now, with international cricket behind him, Wade is all set to embrace a new chapter in his career as he joins the Australian team’s coaching staff.
Wade’s international cricket journey, which began with a T20 match against South Africa in 2011, has been full of key moments. Over the years, he has played in 92 T20 Internationals, 97 ODIs, and 36 Tests, contributing significantly as a wicketkeeper-batsman. In T20Is, Wade scored a total of 1202 runs, while in ODIs, he made 1867 runs, and his Test career added another 13-year record to his name.
His new coaching role begins with a major assignment—the ODI home series against Pakistan set to kick off on November 4. Wade has taken up responsibilities as Australia’s fielding and keeping coach, bringing his skills and years of on-field experience to help improve the team’s performance.
Despite his international retirement, Wade’s cricket journey is far from over. He will continue to play white-ball cricket in various leagues worldwide, including the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2025, where fans can still catch him in action.
