Moeen Ali, the 37-year-old all-rounder, once again proved his worth in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by playing a key role in Guyana Amazon Warriors’ victory over St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Even though Guyana posted a modest total of 137 runs, Moeen’s tight and accurate bowling restricted the opposition, leading his team to a 30-run win.
Hetmyer’s Knock Saves Guyana
Guyana’s innings didn’t start well. The top order collapsed quickly, with both openers dismissed for just 2 runs in the first over. By the fourth over, the scoreboard read 28/3, leaving the team in serious trouble. However, Shimron Hetmyer played a captain’s knock to revive the innings. Hetmyer smashed 63 runs from 33 balls, including 5 sixes and 4 fours, stabilizing the innings and providing the much-needed push.
Lower-order contributions also played a part in the total. Romario Shepherd chipped in with a crucial unbeaten 34 runs off 22 balls, helping Guyana reach a fighting total of 137. Despite Ashmead Ned’s brilliant spell for St. Kitts, where he took 4 wickets for just 25 runs, Hetmyer’s brilliance ensured Guyana had something to defend.
Moeen Ali’s Frugal Spell Turns the Game
Chasing 137 was not going to be easy, and Guyana’s bowlers made sure it wasn’t. Moeen Ali, known for his spin bowling, delivered a masterclass in controlling the game. His 4-over spell was nothing short of magical as he gave away just 9 runs and took 2 crucial wickets at the top of St. Kitts’ batting order. Moeen bowled with the kind of economy usually seen in Test cricket, not in T20, frustrating the opposition and limiting their scoring opportunities.
It wasn’t just Moeen who shined with the ball. Fast bowler Shamar Joseph picked up 3 wickets, also conceding just 9 runs in 2.3 overs. Their combined effort saw St. Kitts and Nevis bowled out for 107 runs, 30 short of the target, securing Guyana’s impressive win.
Moeen Ali’s Recent Retirement
Interestingly, Moeen Ali’s CPL success comes right after his international retirement. The former England all-rounder, who announced his retirement on September 8, had been a key player in England’s T20 and ODI World Cup campaigns. Moeen revealed that discussions with the England team management made him realize it was time to step aside and allow younger players to step in. Yet, despite stepping away from international cricket, Moeen continues to make a significant impact in franchise leagues.
Guyana Amazon Warriors’ fans will surely be hoping for more magic from Moeen as they continue their CPL journey.
