Navdeep Singh, a javelin thrower from Haryana, has made India proud by winning a gold medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Competing in the Men’s Javelin Throw F41 category, Navdeep’s victory marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first Indian athlete to win a medal in this category, which is reserved for athletes with short stature. His win comes as a source of pride and inspiration, especially given the challenges he faced throughout his life.
Navdeep’s Determination Amid Adversity
Navdeep’s journey has not been easy. Born in Buana Lakhu village, Haryana, Navdeep has dealt with dwarfism since childhood. Standing at 4 feet 4 inches tall, he faced relentless bullying and taunts from those around him, often being called a “dwarf” by other children in his neighborhood. This deeply affected Navdeep, leading him to isolate himself and stay indoors for long periods.
His struggle with self-confidence changed in 2012 when Navdeep received the National Child Award, a moment that significantly boosted his morale. From there, he focused on sports, drawing inspiration from India’s javelin star, Neeraj Chopra.
A Historic Win at the Paralympics
At the Paris Paralympics, Navdeep’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. In his third attempt, he threw a javelin to a distance of 47.32 meters, initially securing a silver medal. However, Iran’s Sadegh Bet Sayah, who had thrown 47.64 meters and won gold, was later disqualified for violating Paralympic rules. This resulted in Navdeep’s silver being upgraded to a gold medal, a moment of immense joy for him, his family, and the nation.
Navdeep’s mother, Mukesh Rani, and his brother, Mandeep Sheoran, were by his side throughout the competition, cheering him on. After the event, Navdeep shared in an interview how difficult his journey had been due to the constant teasing he faced as a child, but his determination never wavered.

Inspiration from Neeraj Chopra
Though Neeraj Chopra, India’s Olympic javelin champion, couldn’t win gold at the Paris Olympics, his influence on Navdeep has been profound. Navdeep considers Neeraj as his role model and has always strived to follow in his footsteps. With this historic win, Navdeep has not only achieved personal success but has also brought glory to India, inspiring countless others who face similar struggles.
