In a significant move, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has imposed a lifetime ban on three national hockey players, Murtaza Yaqoob, Ehtesham Aslam, and Abdur Rehman, along with a physiotherapist named Waqas. The decision has shocked the hockey community as it was not due to common issues like match-fixing or misconduct but for seeking asylum in Europe during an international tournament.
Players Seek Asylum During Nations Cup
The incident occurred during the Nations Cup held last month in the Netherlands and Poland. Instead of returning to Pakistan with the rest of the team, the three players reportedly stayed behind, attempting to seek political asylum in the Netherlands. This decision led to the severe action taken by the PHF, which aims to send a strong message about discipline and commitment to the national team.
Official Statement from the PHF
Rana Mujahid, Secretary General of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, confirmed the bans, expressing disappointment in the players’ actions. He stated, “After the team returned from the Netherlands, we scheduled a training camp for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy. However, these players refused to join, citing domestic issues. Later, we discovered that they were attempting to seek asylum in Holland.”
Efforts to Bring Players Back
In response to the situation, the PHF has initiated efforts to bring the players back to Pakistan. The federation has reached out to the Home and Foreign Ministries, requesting assistance in deporting the players from the Netherlands. This move is part of a broader strategy to uphold the integrity of Pakistan’s national sports teams.
Financial Struggles Highlighted
This incident also sheds light on the ongoing financial struggles within Pakistan’s hockey setup. The PHF has acknowledged that their financial situation is dire, with players not receiving adequate salaries or travel allowances. This may have contributed to the players’ decision to seek asylum, highlighting a deeper issue within the country’s sports administration.
