New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the opportunity to personally congratulate Indian Paralympic medalists who have brought pride to the nation with their stellar performances at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The athletes who received the Prime Minister’s call included Mona Agarwal, Preeti Pal, Manish Narwal, and Rubina Francis, all of whom have secured medals in their respective events.
Celebrating India’s Medalists
Mona Agarwal earned India a bronze medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle standing SH1 category, while Avani Lekhara, another star shooter, clinched gold in the same event. Rubina Francis also showcased her shooting prowess by winning bronze in the women’s 10-meter air pistol SH1 category. In the men’s 10-meter air pistol SH1 event, Manish Narwal secured a silver medal, adding to India’s growing tally of accolades.
A Call of Encouragement
Prime Minister Modi expressed his pride and admiration for the athletes during his call, praising their dedication and hard work. He lauded their achievements, stating that the entire country stands proud of their success on the global stage. Although Avani Lekhara was unable to join the call due to her participation in an ongoing event, PM Modi sent his best wishes to her for the upcoming competitions.
India’s Strong Presence at Paris 2024
India’s participation in the Paris 2024 Paralympics is historic, with a record 84 para-athletes competing across 12 disciplines, three more than in the previous Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The introduction of new sports such as para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo marks a significant expansion of India’s presence at the Games.
Making History
This year’s Paralympics has already seen several historic moments for India. Avani Lekhara made headlines by becoming the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Mona Agarwal’s bronze in the same event ensured India’s first-ever double podium finish in shooting. Meanwhile, Preeti Pal achieved a personal best and secured bronze in the women’s 100m T35 race, marking India’s first-ever medal in a track event at the Paralympics.
In addition, Indian archers Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi set a new world record in the mixed team qualifying event, further solidifying India’s strong performance at the Games.
As of now, India has won a total of five medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including one gold, one silver, and three bronze. The nation looks forward to more exceptional performances as the Games continue.
