With IPL 2025 approaching, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are gearing up for a significant reshuffle, and all eyes are on KL Rahul’s future with the franchise. According to recent reports, the LSG management, led by mentor Zaheer Khan and coach Justin Langer, is considering releasing Rahul before the mega auction, a decision fueled by concerns over his strike rate and performance as captain over the last three seasons.
Why LSG Might Release KL Rahul
KL Rahul has led LSG for three IPL seasons, but his strike rate has often been a topic of discussion. According to sources close to the franchise, both Zaheer Khan and Justin Langer are dissatisfied with Rahul’s tendency to play slow innings, which they believe hampers the team’s chances in high-pressure games.
An internal analysis by the team suggested that whenever Rahul played a long innings and put runs on the board, LSG ended up losing more often than not. In the fast-paced nature of the IPL, where every over matters, this style has not suited the team’s overall strategy.
With the introduction of the Impact Player rule, LSG is keen on having a dynamic approach, and Rahul’s current playing style doesn’t align with this vision. The management believes that they need a player who can start aggressively and keep up with the game’s momentum right from the beginning.
Will KL Rahul Be Re-acquired in the Auction?
While it seems likely that LSG will release Rahul, whether they would bid for him in the auction remains uncertain. A final decision will only be made during the auction itself.
Interestingly, LSG is also keeping an eye on Delhi Capitals’ Rishabh Pant. If Pant is not retained by his franchise, LSG will make an effort to bring him on board as captain. However, the situation around Pant is also complex, as Delhi Capitals, under the joint management of JSW and GMR Group, has yet to make a clear decision on their retention strategy. The GMR Group will take over decision-making for the upcoming season, which adds to the uncertainty surrounding Pant’s future.
LSG’s Retention Plans for IPL 2025
Despite the uncertainty around KL Rahul, LSG has already shortlisted a few key players they plan to retain for the next season. Among them are:
- Nicholas Pooran: The wicketkeeper-batsman has been an explosive player for LSG and will likely continue to be a key part of the team’s strategy.
- Ravi Bishnoi: The young leg-spinner has been consistently impressive and is almost certain to be retained.
- Mayank Yadav: The fast bowler has caught the attention of the LSG management and is also expected to be a top retention.
In addition, LSG is also considering retaining one of their uncapped players—either Ayush Badoni or Mohsin Khan. Both have shown potential and are seen as valuable assets for the team moving forward.
