The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a landmark announcement regarding the Women’s T20 World Cup prize money, ensuring gender equality in cricket rewards. In a historic move, the prize money for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the same as for men’s cricket. This decision aligns with the ICC’s commitment to promote gender parity in sports.
Women to Receive Same Prize Money as Men
The team that wins the Women’s T20 World Cup will now take home USD 2.34 million (approximately ₹19.59 crore). This is a significant increase compared to previous tournaments and matches the prize money awarded to the men’s T20 World Cup champions. This change is a major step forward, as the previous winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup received only $1 million.
ICC’s Commitment to Gender Equality
The ICC had already made headlines in July 2023 by announcing equal match fees for both men and women in ICC tournaments. This prize money change comes ahead of schedule, initially planned for 2030 but now implemented seven years earlier. This bold move makes cricket one of the first major sports to offer equal prize money for both men and women at the World Cup level.
Women’s T20 World Cup Venue Shifted
The Women’s T20 World Cup, set to begin on October 3, 2024, has been relocated from Bangladesh to the UAE. With the new prize structure, this tournament will not only showcase thrilling cricket but also stand as a symbol of progress for women’s sports.
