The much-loved singing reality show Indian Idol 15 is set to return, with Vishal Dadlani, Shreya Ghoshal, and Badshah taking the judging seats. As the auditions unfold, a recent promo has been making rounds on social media, where Vishal Dadlani stops a contestant mid-performance for mimicking popular singers, Atif Aslam and Arijit Singh.
Contestant Tries to Copy Atif Aslam’s Style
In the promo, Lakshya Mehta, a 21-year-old from Amritsar, begins his audition performance. As soon as he starts singing, Shreya Ghoshal removes her headphones, clearly signaling her discomfort with his rendition. Lakshya’s singing style appeared to be heavily inspired by Atif Aslam’s signature voice, which didn’t sit well with the judges.
Vishal Dadlani, known for his straightforward feedback, quickly interrupted the performance. He said, “Don’t sing like that. This is Indian Idol, a platform to create idols, not copy them. The day you imitate someone else, you’ll be left singing in hotels and restaurants.”
Imitating Arijit Singh Also Draws Criticism
In addition to copying Atif Aslam, Lakshya attempted to sing Tum Kya Mile, mimicking Arijit Singh’s style. This further frustrated Vishal, who pointed out that while Lakshya’s singing was good, it lacked originality. He added, “First you copied Arijit and then Atif. You sing well, but this is not your real voice. To become an Indian Idol, you have to showcase your own talent, not someone else’s.”
Vishal’s Advice: Find Your Own Identity
Vishal Dadlani’s main concern was that Lakshya was relying too much on imitating other famous singers. He told the young contestant, “I love your voice, but I don’t like copying. To be a real artist, you need to find your own identity. You can’t be a star by constantly mimicking others.”
