Actor Jayasuriya recently faced questioning by the Kerala Police over sexual harassment allegations brought against him by an actress. The actor, well-known in the Malayalam film industry, firmly denied the accusations during his interrogation at the Cantonment Police Station, stating that the case is entirely fabricated. This marks the latest development in a high-profile controversy that has raised concerns within the industry.
Allegations and Police Investigation
The case against Jayasuriya stems from a complaint filed by an actress, who accused him and several others, including MLA M Mukesh, actor Maniyanpilla Raju, and Idavela Babu, of misconduct on a film set. The actress alleged that the incident took place during the shooting of a movie at the Kerala Secretariat. Based on her complaint, an FIR was lodged against the actor on August 28.
Jayasuriya Speaks Out
In his statement to the police, Jayasuriya completely denied the allegations and called the case a deliberate fabrication. According to reports from local media outlets like Mathrubhumi and Manorama, Jayasuriya referred to himself as a “living martyr” while speaking to the press. He expressed his concern over the situation, stating, “I completely deny these allegations. This is a fabricated matter. I don’t even need anticipatory bail for this.”
Actor Expresses Concern Over False Allegations
Jayasuriya also voiced concerns about the growing trend of false accusations, highlighting how such cases could disrupt not only his life but the lives of others. “It is worrying that people are making such false allegations. While I have the platform to defend myself, many others do not have this opportunity, and such claims can destabilize many families,” the actor said.
Legal Battle Ahead
Determined to clear his name, Jayasuriya stated, “I will continue to fight these allegations legally until I am proven innocent.” He further shared his frustration over multiple accusations, saying, “Two false allegations have already been made against me. Although the woman who made these claims has implied it is me, she has also denied it in various places.”
A New FIR and Special Investigation Team (SIT)
The Kerala Police registered a new case of sexual harassment against Jayasuriya after a separate complaint accused him of molestation on a film set in 2012–2013. A fresh FIR has been filed at the Karamana Police Station under sections 354 and 354C of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which relate to assault and voyeurism.
In response to these claims, the Kerala government has appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the accusations against Jayasuriya and other prominent figures named in the complaint. The SIT is expected to thoroughly investigate the matter and deliver a comprehensive report.
Allegations in Light of the Hema Committee Report
These latest allegations come at a time when the Malayalam film industry is under scrutiny following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. The report exposed widespread sexual harassment in the industry, prompting many female actors to come forward with their experiences. The ongoing case against Jayasuriya has sparked further discussion on the treatment of women in the industry and the need for systemic reforms.
